Road transport permits for passengers, applied for at the various Road Transportation Boards and Permit Boards, situated in the RSA.

LRTB (Local Road Transport Board)
Each Province has its own Transportation Board which considers and issues permits for the transportation of passengers/tourists/own employees.

Permits are issued in conjunction with i.e. the Gauteng Public Passenger Road Transport Act, Act no 7 of 2001.

Who needs a public passenger permit?
The Act specifies that:-

"A person undertaking a public road transport service must -

  1. have the necessary permit, operating licence or ad hoc authorisation; and
  2. be registered in terms of this Act in case of minibus taxi-type, metered taxi, bus-type and coach-type services…"

Operating licences for public passenger road transport services are issued in respect of the following services:
